Periodically throughout the year, special classes are offered to augment the general classes. Check the Session Calendar for dates. Long Level 4 classes will focus on difficult asanas and subtlety. Students must be able to push up independently into a back bend and full arm balance, and hold 5 minute Sirsasana and Sarvangasana, no wall, with variations. Pranayama, the fourth stage of yoga, teaches students the rhythmic conscious control of breath. These exercises focus the mind and strengthen the nerves. Students must have an established practice of asana before beginning Pranayama. This class will include in depth work on restorative asanas along with Pranayama. This class is open to Advanced Beginners and above. Continuing Pranayama is for students who are practicing Pranayama regularly and have completed at least one session of the Pranayama weekly class. Target Classes are longer classes that focus on a particular aspect of the discipline. Check the Session Calendar for complete information. Yoga Philosophy Discussion will examine excerpts from different texts monthly. Discussion Questions will be available two weeks before the meeting to aid students in their readings. Skills Class for Teachers is for new teachers, teachers who want to continue to develop their teaching skills, and those students who may intend to become teachers in the future. Training in teaching skills such as how to evaluate students' difficulties and modify poses, how to clearly articulate instructions, how to effectively adjust students, and how to best sequence classes will be covered. Anatomy and physiology as they relate to yoga will also be discussed. Certified lyengar Teachers who want help preparing for the next level of certification are encouraged to enroll in these classes. The appropriate syllabus for each students' credential level will be included in the sequences for these Saturday Classes. Guest Teacher Workshops are proudly and periodically offered by the Ann Arbor School of Yoga. Be sure to check the Session Calendar for these special events. |
